EUROVISION FANS LOSE THEIR MINDS OVER 'INSANE' WILL FERRELL CAMEO

Across its 70-year history, the Eurovision Song Contest has always been one for surprises.

But nobody, not even die-hard fans, could have expected the inclusion of Will Ferrell during a segment on the BBC show.

To mark the 70th anniversary, the competition pulled out all the stops to celebrate the landmark milestone in Vienna.

After opening with an emotional tribute about the seven-decade history of Eurovision that left fans in floods of tears, the show then portrayed some messages from other contestants and fans.

As each person reflected on what Eurovision meant to them, suddenly the Step Brothers star, 58, made a surprise cameo during the video messages.

In a short clip, he said: ‘One word for Eurovision? Let me think… what could it be? I know, joy!’

Reacting to the moment on social media, @superTV247 wrote on X: ‘Yes that is Will Ferrell and yes this is still #Eurovision.’

Wiesel also wrote: ‘This is just plain crazy, that Will Ferrell was here to switch on.’

David, meanwhile, said: ‘How great to see Will Ferrell at this #EuroSemi1 in Vienna, even if it’s through a video, evoking his character in that hilarious #Eurovision tribute movie.

‘I’ve probably watched it like 8 times and it still feels like not enough.’

Echoing the other reactions, Ava also added: ‘Will Ferrell cameo is INSANE #Eurovision.’

Despite fans’ shock over his involvement, the Hollywood actor does actually have an amusing history with Eurovision after starring in and co-writing the musical comedy film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

The Netflix movie follows Icelandic singers Lars (Ferrell) and Sigrit (Rachel McAdams) as they represent their country in the contest.

Having attended in 2018 and 2019, Ferrell is a huge fan of the show.

Recently, it was also confirmed that his comedy film would be turning into a musical on Broadway.

Discussing the project, he told Radio Times: ‘We are more than excited to bring Eurovision to Broadway. The stage musical is a perfect place to continue our celebration of all the things we love about this amazing and unifying song competition.’

Eurovision fans accuse Boy George of ‘ruining’ San Marino’s semi-final performance

In other Eurovision news, British pop star Boy George has been accused of ‘ruining’ San Marino’s semi-final performance after the country failed to make it through to the Grand Final.

The 64-year-old Culture Club singer performed Superstar, which he co-wrote, alongside Senhit at the Wiener Stadthalle in Vienna, Austria.

After Senhit began the performance in a shimmering tunnel, wearing a shiny silver outfit matching the costumes of her dancers, she called Boy George’s name before he appeared on a silver throne, dressed in a black suit with a silver hat.

Reacting to his cameo, however, fans on social media claimed that it was ‘pointless’.

Writing on X, Andrew said: ‘Boy George ruins that song… what’s the point of him. Awful vocals.’

Gillian also wrote: ‘I quite like this but the addition of Boy George is pointless and he sounds bad.’

Meanwhile, Shakira added: ‘Is Boy George getting paid by the word? His part was like “go girl, give us nothing”.’

Previously, Senhit competed alongside American rapper Flo-Rida in Rotterdam in 2021.

The rulebook of Eurovision states that artists don’t need to be a national of the country they represent to enter the competition.

However, following Tuesday’s semi-final vote, San Marino – along with Portugal, Georgia, Montenegro and Estonia – will not be going any further.

This comes after Boy George, whose real name is George O’Dowd, was also slated for ‘giving nothing’ at the competition’s first dress rehearsal.

The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star was making his first appearance in the annual competition.

On Thursday night there will be a second semi-final, where another lot of 15 countries will compete for 10 spots.

Among these artists is former Love Island star Antigoni Buxton, who is representing Cyprus.

In total, five countries have boycotted the competition this year, with Irish broadcaster RTE even refusing to air it, over Israel’s continued participation in the contest.
