THE PRINCESS DIARIES 3 DIRECTOR TEASES MAJOR ORIGINAL CAST RETURNS AND A BIGGER GENOVIA THAN EVER

The world of The Princess Diaries is finally preparing to reclaim its royal throne with the long-awaited third chapter, under the rule of Queen Mia herself. Ever since the 2001 classic starring Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews, and Héctor Elizondo transformed into a $108 million Disney phenomenon, fandoms have treated Mia Thermopolis’ journey like a generational comfort legacy. And while talks of a third installment first surfaced back in 2022, the palace doors now finally seem ready to crack open as director Adele Lim teases major familiar returns to Genovia.

Speaking to Variety at the Gold Gala carpet, Lim revealed that the team is focusing on “getting the story right” because of how deeply loved The Princess Diaries remains across generations. Lim further explained that while Hollywood has long celebrated “wish fulfilment” stories for princesses, The Princess Diaries 3 aims to shift that fantasy toward queens instead, exploring a woman stepping fully into her power. Teasing more familiar returns from the original films, the director hinted that longtime fans can expect plenty of surprises waiting inside, especially for Queen Mia, played by Anne Hathaway.

“If you were a fan of the original first two movies, I think you can look forward to a lot of fun returns,” Lim told Variety.

Although production timelines are still being finalised, Lim confirmed that Genovia will once again unfold in full royal glory across Europe. Beyond the palace gates, he is also expanding another beloved universe through HBO’s upcoming Crazy Rich Asians sequel series, returning to the billionaire world of Rachel Chu and Nick Young after the original film stormed past $239 million globally.

Before Queen Mia returns to the throne, her royal legacy had already crowned one of Disney’s biggest nostalgia eras.

Anne Hathaway’s journey from Mia Thermopolis to the Queen of Genovia

Released on August 11, 2004, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement finally transformed Mia Thermopolis from Genovia’s awkward princess into its rightful Queen. Forced to follow an old royal law demanding marriage before the throne, Anne Hathaway’s Mia ultimately shattered tradition instead, refusing the arranged wedding and convincing Parliament to abolish the rule entirely. The film closed with Queen Clarisse stepping down as Mia officially became Her Majesty Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia, helping the sequel march toward a $135 million worldwide box office run and eventual Disney nostalgia-classic status.

The sequel also reunited the franchise’s beloved royal circle while quietly launching future Hollywood stars. Julie Andrews returned as Queen Clarisse alongside Héctor Elizondo as Joe and Heather Matarazzo as Lilly Moscovitz, while Chris Pine made his major film debut as Nicholas Devereaux years before becoming a blockbuster leading man. The cast further included Raven-Symoné, John Rhys-Davies, and even a young Abigail Breslin in a cameo appearance.

And now, as Queen Mia prepares to reclaim Genovia’s throne once again, fandoms remain locked in to see what royal surprises Adele Lim is hiding behind the palace curtains this time.
