ALICIA SILVERSTONE IS RETURNING FOR THE 'CLUELESS' SEQUEL – AND CHER HOROWITZ IS ALL GROWN UP

If there’s one thing Hollywood has learnt over the past few years, it’s that audiences can’t resist a healthy dose of nostalgia. Between The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Freakier Friday, Hollywood has realised that audiences are more than ready to revisit the characters they grew up with.

Few films feel more deserving of that treatment than Clueless, Amy Heckerling’s endlessly quotable 1995 comedy that turned yellow plaid suits and knee-high socks into permanent fixtures of pop culture.

Earlier this year, however, fans thought those hopes had been dashed. Reports emerged that US streaming service, Peacock, had quietly abandoned development of a planned Clueless sequel series starring Alicia Silverstone, leaving many wondering whether Cher Horowitz had finally hung up her Alaïa dresses for good (As if!).

Thankfully, those fears proved short-lived. Paramount+ has now officially greenlit a new sequel series, with Silverstone returning to her most iconic role more than three decades after the original film first arrived in cinemas.

Alicia Silverstone Is Returning As Cher Horowitz

The biggest news? Alicia Silverstone is officially back.

Paramount+ announced on July 30 that the actress will reprise her role as Cher Horowitz, while also serving as an executive producer on the project. Original Clueless writer and director Amy Heckerling is also returning as an executive producer, alongside longtime producer Robert Lawrence.

Behind the camera, the series is in experienced hands. Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are attached as writers and executive producers, with Jordan Weiss (Dollface) also writing and executive producing the project.

What Will The Clueless Sequel Be About?

Rather than revisiting Cher’s teenage years, the new series will catch up with her around 30 years after the events of the original film.

According to Paramount+, Cher has seemingly figured life out. She’s now a successful businesswoman and has mastered motherhood – until her own daughter reaches high school, forcing Cher to navigate teenage drama from the other side and leaving her feeling ‘clueless’ all over again.

It’s a premise that mirrors what made the original so enduring: taking the social politics of high school and filtering them through Cher’s endlessly optimistic worldview, only this time with a generational twist.

Will Any Other Original Cast Members Return?

For now, Silverstone is the only original cast member confirmed to return.

Paramount+ has yet to announce whether Paul Rudd, Donald Faison, Stacey Dash, Elisa Donovan or Breckin Meyer will reprise their roles, although fans will undoubtedly be hoping for a few familiar faces.

The sequel will, of course, also arrive without Brittany Murphy, whose portrayal of Tai became one of the film’s most beloved performances before the actress died in 2009.

When Will The Clueless Sequel Be Released?

There’s no release date just yet.

Production is expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027, meaning audiences will likely have to wait a little longer before returning to Bronson Alcott High, or wherever Cher’s next chapter takes her.

Until then, we’ll happily keep rewatching the original and reminding ourselves that an Alaïa dress is, in fact, ‘a totally important designer.’
